 | Birch Bark Creations | For centuries Native Americans have taken materials from the earth to make the necessary products used in daily living.
Their "stewardship" of the riches given by the earth, commonly known as 'Mother' among the tribes, can be a good lesson for us today, in a wirld that is beginning to realize the necessity to use natural resourse in a wise and realistic way.
One material used in this meanne ris Birch Bark. This remarkable material is wind and water proof and is highly resistance to decay. It is so resistant that even canoes are constructed from this amazing resource. Since it is such a versatile product in the hands of expert and superb craftspeople, cups, bowls, torches, splints for broken bones, cooking pots, and more wonderful things are created.
It is the custom amoung Native Americans to never use more of the Earth's resources than are needed. Thism practice holds true in the hunting of animals for food and hides, and also in harvesting Birch Bark. Rarely is a birch tree cut down: rather all but the last or deepest layer is stripped off the tree's trunk. This unique harvesting practice allows the tree itself to continue growing, and within a few short years, the outer bark has also regrown to its orginal thickness and is ready to be stripped again as needed.
What a wonderful example of "Stewardship of the Land" give by Native Americans. |
