What
began as a gardening venture has turned into a family business
that promotes South Dakota as well as helping to educate people
around the world about the culture of the Northern Great Plains
Indians. Colleen's Gardens and Native American Gifts, features a
variety of products ranging from traditional sun-dried sweet
corn, dream catcher jewelry, and hand braided sweet grass to
birch bark bird houses, potpourri, and some pottery. It's
absolutely authentic Indian!
Business owner Colleen Heminger-Cordell is a member of the
Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux Tribe. The skills she uses in making her
products were learned from her grandmother and Arikara Sioux
great-grandmother. Growing, harvesting and making these
functional, beautiful, and unique gifts keeps the Heminger-Cordell
family very busy.
Colleen, is a great, great, great granddaughter of the Sioux
Chief Little Crow, and Director of "the American Indian
Culture Research Center" of Blue Cloud Abbey located in Marvin,
SD. The center helps to educate non-Indians about the Indian
Culture, by visiting schools and interested groups in the
Dakotas and Minnesota. |
